info culled about shows i pulled

the shows listed on this site came off one at a time – each an event unto itself.

collected here are original descriptions i wrote in advance of each show, as well as images of the handbills passed out to promote each event. when available, documentation of the action also appears.

an event list includes some shows not seen on the home page.

these are flowers in the dustbin – evidence of moments passed. for future action look elsewhere – the best show is always the next!

– live in concert –solo performances

AUDREY CHEN

Articulate down to a single vocal cord click, Berlin-based improvisor Audrey Chen hyperextends voice, mining material in between – and beyond – previous utterance. Finding sound via microtones of larynx squeak, blowing wind turbulence with lip-flip flutters, and plumming the corporeal with full throated phonation, Chen also channels an electric flow of tone and pulse accompanying herself on a Ciat Lonbarde synth. Though clearly diverged from staid forms, she thankfully maintains the rigor of her Classical training to service ever-new and of-the-moment free expression! Returning to L.A. for this solo scorcher and hopefully more, Chen has worked with Maria Chavez, Nate Wooley, C. Spencer Yeh, and Martín Escalante among many other players in the field. She also maintains a couple of core duos, regularly parrying with Phil Minton, and playing in Beam Splitter with Norwegian trombonist Henrik Munkeby Nørstebø.

NOUR MOBARAK

Scouting a new situation with each outing, Nour Mobarak is an artist whose performance practice rarely repeats a scene, though – it could be said, out loud – her voice itself occupies a core presence in her work. Recently Mobarak has investigated the limits of language via a vexing and hyper-personal mode of inquiry: recording conversations with her father, who speaks clearly, but is constrained by a fugue state and a perpetually fleeting memory. Topics progress only so far, before they cycle back or drift away, even as the polylingual pair hop from one tongue to another. As she readies a record that draws from these convos, she also prepares a late 2018 live performance at Human Resources Los Angeles. What it will be, and how we will remember it, may differ from one moment to the next.

CONSCIOUS SUMMARY

Rightly associated with the autonomous zone that is (the) Handbag Factory performance venue and the Seahorse Sound recording studio, Samur Khouja has also long poured the surreal into a solo project called Conscious Summary. This is a sound space where possibilities remain open. As this master of tech patches together an organic array of electronic process, we can access other existential planes via swelling hums and dream of desert sand blowing. Just as easily, auditory incursions of the weird and jagged shock us back into place. Conscious Summary’s latest "Exhaustions" has been issued just this month on Skintrade Recordings.

ELI KESZLER (New York - Shelter Press)

Touring recently with Laurel Halo and presently as a member of Oneohtrix Point Never's MYRIAD ensemble, percussionist and polymath Eli Keszler runs with the advance guard of electronic expression. Though his solo work too fits into that aesthetic milieu, the source of his pulses and clicks is sometimes also a source of surprise. With a drumkit at it's core, Keszler corrals a menagerie of acoustic sound, short-cutting the signal chain to focus on the intimate and immediate.Keszler's solo Los Angeles appearance at Zebulon relates to his ninth album – Stadium – which is being released shortly beforehand by the cross-disciplinary French publishing house Shelter Press. With Stadium, Keszler stages a cycle of empathetic urbanism – organic pitter-patterns inspired by the massive complexities and asynchronies of the metropolis. Reduced to the human scale – and with his pointillist approach so precise – the space around the sounds becomes a fluid element at play.Keszler is a versatile player and has also collaborated across the gamut with figures diverse and singular: Christian Wolff, Joe McPhee, Tony Conrad, Rashad Becker, and James Hoff. His own sounds have been published by crucial contemporary labels including PAN and Empty Editions, and he has made a number of major sound installations at key settings including the Barbican in London, the Kitchen in New York, and Boston City Hall.

$3.33 (Leaving Records)

Celia Hollander’s $3.33 project has registered her as an emergent maker of timbre and pattern, repetition and layer. Rendering the high minimalism of Riley and Reich relevant to this very moment, her own din is always novel, and often earmarked with digital artifact intact. Hollander’s total art is a practice uncompartmentalized as she scores across media and contexts, be it for dance, installation, car stereos, or player piano. In it’s most available forms - in the cloud and in concert - $3.33 is currency.

GREG KOWALSKY (Mexican Summer)

Gregg Kowalsky’s masterful 2017 meditation on radiance – L’Orange, L’Orange – recasts Ambient as a foreground concern, fully embracing it as a pop form. This sun-spotter paints with a pallet of tone and drone, stretching meshes of moiré into pastoral fields of sound, transposing a skyward gaze into a pattern haze. With flecks of magnetism in the air, Kowalsky can turn up the heat in concert, play the room, and simmer in the moment. Working the site specific, and keen to the psycho-acoustic, he lets flow a live electronic music that happens between the ears. Turn your head, hear?

BULBS (Shelter Press, Important)

A duo for a decade plus, Bulbs operate autonomously – and outside the lines – imagining and inhabiting their own sound-world. Tones flow and quiver amidst sap drips and wing flitter! Their abstraction abounds in a compost of electronic process, though guitar and drum hits may be closer than they appear to the ear. Communiqués from their cocoon have been spotted as limited art-editions, official label releases, and fittingly as a 12” on the French imprint Shelter Press. Luckily local to L.A., the Southland has a better forecast to see Bulbs crop up live in the act. Buy a ticket and take the aphid trip.

John Wiese’s digital incisions and perpetual bricolage have laid a path from the extremities of the American underground, around the earth, and to the studios of Ina-GRM at Radio France – the birthplace of musique concrète. Via a long running practice of recycling sounds from the room recordings of previous performances, he drags the acoustic trace of one space into the next, layering up a dense palimpsest of sound. Or – just as easily – Wiese can diffuse new manipulations and inventions, pulling apart and reconfiguring the core characteristics of traditional instruments such as horns and drums. After nearly two decades of touring and recording as a solo artist, as a serial collaborator, and at the core of the noise-grind-concept act Sissy Spacek, Wiese has been a perennial figure of experimental music activity in Los Angeles, but early last year found a new headquarters in the city of Cleveland, Ohio. This is his first local solo headline performance since.

JAKE MEGINSKY (Open Mouth, NNA Tapes - Northampton, MA)

Jake Meginsky is a rarefied percussionist who can embrace, eschew, or simply chew on rhythm. Jake's tour rig may now be a shuffle of bits and bytes, but his instincts as a hitter-of-things are intact. His digital concrète has opened the possibility of a spectralized batterie: recombining elements into a new flow, or – just as easily – reducing them to crackle. Jake has rattled, pulsed, and swung with a set of collaborators wild and diverse including Bill Nace, Alvin Lucier, Joan La Barbara, Greg Kelley, Joe McPhee, Paul Flaherty, and John Truscinski. He is also a filmmaker, having just completed a new feature documentary about a key collaborator and mentor: Milford Graves Full Mantis.

JH1.FS3

(iDEAL Recordings)

JH1.FS3 is the duo of Frederikke Hoffmeier and Jesse Sanes. Though each figures heavily in the now-generation of power electronics – as Puce Mary and Leibestod respectively – JH1.FS3 delineates a more subtle “cinema of the ear.” Here, their words are spoken amidst a savvy re-assembly of 20th century avant-sonics: music concrète, technique extension, and pure electronic sound. Indeed, their live sets - and their Loyalty LP on Sweden's iDEAL Recordings - utilize hypnotic material they synthesized while in residence at Stockholm's Elektronmusikstudion EMS and hi-res field recordings that they somehow managed to smuggle out of REM sleep.

Ellen Phan

(Bánh Mì Verlag)

Dithered out over the country are those that know what flows when Ellen Phan’s face is lit by her laptop screen: cascades of concrète and jagged valleys of squelch, with an intention set to nothing less than brainwave state change. This will be her first L.A. performance since the release of her debut Ideomotor Response on the Queens, NY based label Bánh Mì Verlag.

Live Performances + Cinema

JAMES HOFF (PAN – NYC)

James Hoff is a Brooklyn-based artist who tweaks systems across disciplines – from fine art object-making to multimedia actions. His discordant sound work issued on the PAN label has collaged riots and attacked the vernacular – famously introducing computer viruses to drum machine programs and leveraging the resultant degradations as compositional fodder. At this audio-visual summit, Hoff will perform HOBO UFO – a live, video-projected, rapid-fire click and spin through Google Street View driven by his real-time audio – hyper-rhythmic and fractured. HOBO UFO’s debut at Unsound 2017 in Kraków, Poland, utilized streetview imagery of Pripyat – a city in Chernobyl’s Zone of Exclusion. For this realization at Human Resources, however, Hoff’s peripatetic virtual dérive will course through the host city of Los Angeles. HOBO UFO is slated for multimedia release on PAN.

FREE THE LAND (Ascetic House – LA)

Free The Land is an evolving project of change agent Jesse Sanes. A media intervention of environmental impressions natural and domestic, it manifests as electronic sound, installation art, and archive. Live actions fold field recordings, found sound, and computer speech into a compost of synthesis and free manipulation. For this Spring outing, Sanes sonics with contributing member Nial Morgan to express cold and distant extremes as a video-projected ‘live browse’ through an FTL file-set riffs on the project’s recent collaborative communiqué, ‘Arctic Compilation.’

LUKAS MARXT (Köln, Germany)

Imperial Valley (Cultivated Run-off). Color, 2018

Austrian filmmaker Lukas Marxt explores places isolated and remote, considering how landscapes are altered by – and the degree to which they remain impervious to – human influence. Here he will screen a recent short shot above Southern California’s Imperial Valley. Flying by drone, we reconnoiter the region’s agricultural infrastructure, finding a language in the colors, shapes, and structures of it’s incursion into the vast and extreme Sonoran Desert. Shifts of perspective and perception are eerily matched by the psychoacoustics of the film’s hypnotic soundtrack. ‘Imperial Valley (Cultivated Run-off)’ premiered at Berlinale 2018. Filmmaker in attendance.

ELLEN PHAN & NISA KARNSOMPORT (Elixir Sounds – LA)

Dithered out over the country are those that know what flows when Ellen Phan’s face is lit by her laptop screen: cascades of concrète and jagged valleys of squelch, with an intention set to nothing less than brainwave state change. On choice occasions Nisa Karnsomport plies her wares to filter Phan’s noise and signal into a high-velocity sound-reactive video: flashing monochromatic animations, abstract and geometric.

ANGELS IN AMERICA (aka Miami Angels, Angels USA, etc.)

"Underground" is a know-it-when-you-hear-it place. And to take us there, the instrumental and vocal duo Angels in America adhere to no one form or norm. Attention gripping and hypnotically haunting, their soft singings and noisy sonics plum a number of depths with whatever delivers the dreamstate: fuzzed guitar and laconic melody, crunchy sequences and electronic abstractions, spoken words and pulled pranks. Catch the drift.

Their subterranea has been charted on labels such as Digitalis, Night People, and Hundebiss. The members are also known to inhabit the solo guises of Chicklette and Farewell My Concubine.

ALVARIUS B. (Alan Bishop of Sun City Girls)

ERIK DAVIS

SUPREME DICKS

early evening salon / doors at six

ALVARIUS B.

Our bard of the sardonic, Alan Bishop (aka Alvarius B.) has spent the better part of the past decade based in Cairo on a number of critical missions, including an appreciable expansion of his singer-songwriter and six-string strangler oeuvre, much of it cataloged on last year's bodacious Triple LP "With a Beaker on the Burner and an Otter in the Oven." Do come witness this unmistakably rare solo set (for any American city or town) whilst he plucks from a now easily triple-digit songbook that stretches back into his quarter century with Sun City Girls, and forward epochs.

ERIK DAVIS

With the sharpness of a scholar and openness of a seeker, Erik Davis writes and speaks across a breadth of heady topics, bringing an easy erudition to the esoteric and expansive. At this special evening salon, expect reflections on the psychedelic and the weird.

For a full dose, check Techgnosis.

SUPREME DICKS

A storied – if oft erstwhile – unit whose legend emerged in drenched decades past, fortunately keeps it's core of curious heads here in L.A., ever present. Classically and paradoxically, the Dicks' organic rapport and interwoven guitar work may well be driven from existential tension, but – for the listener – also seems to keep it at bay.

CHRIS CORSANO

As a solo performer, Chris Corsano certainly drops jaws with his physical abilities and aesthetic agilities behind the drum kit. But along with the rolls and flurry of percussion are other angles of invention and expression; perhaps a circular breathe through a melodica or reed, and most definitely metallic klang and ring. And dig this, he can go even further inward, using the kit itself as a matrix for expanding the palette, bridging strings atop and pressing winds against skins, bowing and blowing waaay beyond a drum solo into a sort of "ensemble of one." This sensibility is no surprise, as his path over two decades has been couched in duo exchange and group action. Corsano is a singular and dynamic figure in improvised music, continually gigging internationally with a epic list of comrades, moving fluidly from fiery collaborations that continue to unfurl the Free Jazz flag – such as his core duos with Paul Flaherty and Joe McPhee – to latter-day post-genre articulations and obliterations – as with a his projects with Okkyung Lee, Bill Nace, and Bill Orcutt. This is his first full solo performance in Los Angeles since April 2010 at Echo Curio.

LAY/HAUG
Totally in-the-zone, Lay/Haug is the ongoing duo project of violinist Pauline Lay and drummer Kern Haug. Since joining forces a couple of years back, they've performed in town regularly, their vibe taking flight with Lay's drenchly textured string play and deftly dialed electronics. Haug sustains the tension with sparse, proximate rhythms that reminisce the Arkestra's looser excursions. Together they invent a novel terrain, steering sound to a single point of focus, or embracing dissolution with chaotic crumble.

ALEX ZHANG HUNGTAI

Since Last Lizard, Alex Zhang Hungtai has continued to explore freer forms and pursue the out-there – all around the world, literally, actually. In the past year, he's focused on saxophone and – increasingly – drums, playing both in a trio with the Portuguese players David Maranha and Gabriel Ferrandini during a sojourn in Lisbon and at gigs across Europe. An itinerant soul, he continues his quest here as an Angeleno and will perform a solo improvised set at this show.
