“Day-of” email and social media communiqué:

“The Unwrinkled Ear Concert Series, roped together by Andrew Choate (and with key support from Black Editions' Peter Kolovos) brings a steady stream of avant-improvisors to Los Angeles from around the globe. The players have names that even the hippest head may not recognize, but the performances are often mind-bending. Though rooted in a certain lineage and tradition, the sound forms proffered are FIRE, whatever you may call them: Free jazz, free improv, instant composition –idioms and styles oft-overlooked in our fickle SoCal music scenes. To boot, many of the events are truly free, and among the most progressive you can dig.

TONIGHT the name is well known, and the venue large – and with an admission price – but the heat in the room will be massive. Peter Brötzmann's sax wails first registered amidst the social-tumult of the 60s; he was pioneer of free playing in the European sphere, and over time has come to be known as a key figure in the history of Jazz itself. For the first time in many of our adulthoods, he's hitting the stage in L.A. with a band, the Peter Brötzmann Quartet.”
